I hear a lot of talk about QR code lately, as if it is the hottest trend. Actually it has been around for a long time – from grocery store bar-code to club entry scan – we just didn’t pay much attention until recently when it is used more often for advertising purpose. Like in fashion – once touched by advertising, one easily becomes popular or even a trend.Like in fashion, trends are not for everyone. iPhone is hot, but it is probably a waste of money if you don’t need internet, apps, listen to music or watch videos – like my grandma – what she needs is a simple cell phone with big buttons that can make/receive calls. Likewise, QR code is smart, but it is not for you if it is incompatible with your product or service nature – for example your call-to-action is hard to execute on a mobile device…
This may sound like a no-brainer, but you’ll be surprised by how many of us making the simplest mistake without realizing it – just like the girls on the street wearing most trendy pieces that actually highlight their physical weaknesses (no offense but it happens to the best of us).
I’m not against trends. As a matter of fact, usually there’s a reason why a trend becomes one. Whether we are talking about people, brands, technologies, fashion, or anything else, the ones attracting the public’s attention aren’t the richest or the biggest, but those who choose the best options that fit their style/personality, highlight their advantages while still performing the necessary functionality.
So next time when someone suggests a QR code strategy, think about the girls I mentioned above and ask yourself: is it for me? How can I wear the way that makes me stand out?
